The Chateau
Experience a touch of medieval Gothic grandeur

This is the ultimate holiday villa – your own private castle in the European style. It's the kind of place where you might expect to find Rapunzel yearning for her prince from her garret in the highest tower. The Chateau is a five-bedroom villa, set on the Kas peninsula. It has a fantastic location, high up on the slope, surrounded by lush greenery. It could almost be Transylvania, or perhaps the residence of some grand German Baron, with eagles soaring round the turrets. Except this castle has an infinity pool.

Despite its medieval appearance, inside The Chateau is right up-to-date, with comfortable furnishings, and air-conditioned bedrooms. Nevertheless, the ancient character of the place makes its presence felt everywhere, with exposed timbers, rustic kitchen, heavy doors with gated peepholes and curving staircases to take you up into the towers. The thick stone walls and cross-ventilation keep the villa cool.

Coming through the portcullis-like front doors, you step into an entrance hall peopled by classical sculptures, which immediately sets the rather grand tone for your stay. From here, you step down into the huge living area, high-ceilinged and grandly chandeliered, and with lovely views. There is even a minstrel's gallery.

Set at the bottom of one of the towers, a large part of the living area is semi-circular. Either side of the curved area are additional seating areas, including one that features a large fireplace.

From the living room, you step onto a large terrace, with seats and sunshades. You also have access to the steps which take you through the greenery to The Chateau's private bathing platforms at the sea's edge.
On the way down, you pass a bougainvillea-draped patio, shading large Ottomans and a table. It's the ideal place for afternoon tea, surrounded by the heady flavours of jasmine, a particular favourite of The Chateau's resident caretaker. Note, however, that the steps are steep and not really suitable for the elderly, the infirm or the unfit, especially on the way back up.
The ground floor of The Chateau also has a study – a little retreat for those who want some peace and quiet alone – and a toilet, which serves a not dissimilar function.

For medieval splendour, however, the dining area is the place. You could hold a medieval banquet here, with its huge table and another massive chandelier. Gothically arched windows and vaulted ceilings add to the Arthurian magic.
Another living area adjoins the dining room, this one with a ceiling that soars right to the domed roof of another tower. You can sit and play chess here, the nobility of the setting lending an appropriately regal aura to the game.

Opening off the dining area is the spacious kitchen. Even the kitchen has a terrace, which is the perfect place for breakfast.
Stairs from this terrace, as well as leading to the beach, take you to the private entrance of a little apartment-like bedroom, tucked away at the bottom of The Chateau. This has its own private bathroom, with mosaic décor, and a secluded terrace. It is ideal for a couple who want some space for themselves while sharing The Chateau with a larger party.

The upper floors of The Chateau house four more bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a large brass bedstead. This has a private shower room and a large dressing room, which also houses a single bed. The extra bed makes this room particularly suitable for a family, though it has been noted that French nobility used to prefer rooms of this kind, with a single bed for sleeping and a larger bed for other recreational activities.
Two other bedrooms have French beds and private shower rooms, while the fourth is set in one of the towers. The sweep of the curving wall and the lovely views make this an unusual and attractive room. A few steps further up the tower staircase you emerge into a stunning enclosed rooftop terrace, with penty of comfortable seating and superb views.

With the delights of Kas and the surrounding area within easy reach, The Chateau is a unique and characterful base for an unforgettable holiday.
